OPTIONAL - May 14, 2018
We will depart from the Tropical Hotel’s pier heading downstream on the Rio Negro, passing the city of Manaus, the Manaus Floating Harbor, the Municipal Market and the meeting of the Solimões and Negro Rivers (which forms the grand Amazon River) and if we are lucky, we’ll spot some “botos” (River dolphins).
We will then visit the Janauary Ecological reserve, where we will see the famous giant water lilies, aquatic plants native to lakes in the rainforest.
Afterwards, we will visit a craft fair, where Native Indians sell their hand-crafted creations, using traditional materials such as feathers, bones, and seeds. Lunch is included and will be served on a floating restaurant (drinks are not included).
We will take an unforgettable ride through the igarapés and igapós on a motorized canoe (depending on the water level), and then return to the hotel.
Duration: approximately 8 hours. Meals: Breakfast and lunch.
OPTIONAL - May 15, 2018
After breakfast you will meet your guide at the lobby and head to the waterfalls located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. Presidente Figueiredo and Waterfall Reserve are dramatically different than the Rio Negro ecosystem. Rich in towering trees, rushing rivers, splendid waterfalls and natural caves, this unique destination is a wonderful opportunity to explore the majesty of nature.
Depart early morning and travel to the Santuario Ecological Waterfall Reserve. Once there, trek through the primary Amazon forest with its towering old-growth trees and abundant flora. Stop for a swim before breaking for lunch at a restaurant on the side of a rapid.
Afterward, we will arrive at Iracema Falls. While nowhere near the size and scope of those in Iguassu, these jungle falls evoke a rare beauty not found along the main river; they are considered the most beautiful waterfalls of the region.
Swim and explore the many natural pools set in the undulating hills of the upper Amazon Basin before returning to Manaus.
Please note: A passport or valid ID is required on this trip. The identification must be presented to the Federal Highway Police upon inspection.
OPTIONAL - May 16, 2018
After breakfast you will be met by the guide at the lobby to start your city tour. On this tour we will visit the Municipal Market, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Inside the impressive building, we will find a variety of regional products including fish, fruits and herbs. Afterward, we will pass by the Government Palace and view the nearby creek with its typical houses built on stilts. We will then visit the Floating Dock in Manaus, which is deeply connected to the cycle of rubber and in recent years has undergone great changes, in order to make it competitive and suited to the demands of globalization. Our final destination is the Amazon Opera House, the primary symbol from the golden age of the rubber boom, built in 1896. With the help of a recent restoration, the building has maintained the splendor of that epic period.
Duration: approximately 3 hours.
After the tour, you will transfer to the airport on time for your GOL flight #1643 departing at 2:45pm to São Paulo, were you will connect with your GOL flight #1174 departing at 8:40pm to Iguazu, arrive at 10:25pm. After retrieving your bags you will be met by a representative and transferred to the Recanto Cataratas Hotel, check-in and overnight.
OPTIONAL - May 17, 2018
Pick up at the hotel and head towards the Iguaçu National Park in Brazil. In route to the falls, we will drive through the lush, subtropical vegetation of the park. After arrival, we will take a descending trail of the canyon, from where we can enjoy panoramic views of more than 240 falls. We will board a glass elevator, which takes us to a platform where more exquisite views will be revealed. Along with its “sister” park in Argentina, The Iguassu National Park forms the most significant remaining rainforest in the southern cone of South America, which along with the waterfalls have been declared a National Heritage Site by UNESCO. After lunch (not included) we will cross the Tancredo Neves Bridge with its lovely view of the Iguassu Canyon heading towards the Iguaçu National Park in Argentina. Visit the upper walkways which allow a different perspective and more intimate contact with the falls and adjoining rainforest filled with orchids, bromeliads, birds and other wildlife. The highlight of the trip is a visit to the suspended platform at the very brink of the Throat – largest of the waterfalls.
