This 10-day FFI Discover Jordan Journey includes three nights in local homes, olive picking with farmers, a cultural event at a Dead Sea village, and guided tours of some of Jordan’s most magnificent sites. Join us to experience daily life in this fascinating country!

Home Hospitality

Even though Friendship Force does not currently have any clubs in Jordan, Home Hospitality will be provided for three nights by local families.

Live With a Local

  • Friendship Force does not currently have any clubs in Jordan; however this Journey will bring us together in several villages throughout the country where we can interact with local people in many different ways - including 3 nights of home-hosting!
  • Learn to cook a 4 course Jordanian meal.
  • Spend a day with local farmers picking olives, joining a family around an olive tree to share in this time-honored tradition, while also visiting a local olive press where olive oil is produced.
  • Participate in creating traditional crafts, cook Arab bread over a fire, and have lunch with the local community.
  • Make your way up sandstone boulders in the Dana Biosphere Reserve and take in a silent otherworldly sunset.
  • Cook dinner over an open fire under the star-filled night and camp within a nature reserve with a local Bedouin family.

Sightseeing Highlights

  • Visit the King Abdullah Mosque followed by lunch at a favorite local falafel restaurant.
  • See Jerash, one of the cities of the ancient decapolis and one of the largest Roman cities in the Middle East, and Ajloun castle, built during the 12th century by the nephew of the famous Arab general, Saladin.
  • Go on a jeep tour through the Dana Biosphere Reserve.
  • Tour Petra, one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World,” with a private guide.
  • Enjoy a relaxing float in the Dead Sea.

Day 1, October 30

Arrival in Amman.

A representative from Engaging Cultures, our tour liaisons, will meet us when disembark the plane and escort us through immigration and onto our bus.

We will be taken to Amman for our overnight.

(Hotel: Amman Rotana, Meals: None.)

Day 2, October 31

Sleep in and have a leisurely morning.

Then we’ll visit the King Abdullah Mosque followed by lunch at a favorite local falafel restaurant.

After lunch we’ll tour the Roman Citadel as well as the Roman theater in downtown Amman.

Tonight we will learn to cook (then eat) a 4-course Jordanian meal.

Day 3, November 1

After breakfast our guide will take us to Jerash, one of the cities of the ancient Decapolis and one of the largest Roman cities in the Middle East.

Then we will visit Ajloun castle, built during the 12th century by the nephew of the famous Arab general, Saladin.

From there we will head to the nearby village of Orjan for lunch in a local home.

We will then have the afternoon free to spend with our local homestay hosts.

Day 4, November 2

Connection happens best when sharing a task with someone. Today we will spend the day with local farmers picking olives. Join a family around an olive tree and share in this time-honored tradition.

Tea, local snacks, and lunch will be served on the farm.

Afterwards we will visit a local olive press where olive oil is produced.

Day 5, November 3

We will spend another day on the farm picking olives and connecting with our hosts.

(Accommodation: local homes in Orjan village, Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.)

Day 6, November 6

Say goodbye to your new friends in Orjan village and head to the Mars-like Wadi Rum.

After having lunch together in his home, our Bedouin guide will take us on a jeep tour through the nature reserve, sharing his love for the desert with you.

We’ll scramble up sandstone boulders and take in a silent otherworldly sunset.

Our dinner will be cooked over an open fire under the star-filled night.

Tonight we’ll set up tents and camp within the nature reserve next to a local Bedouin family (depending on their availability. If they are not available, guests can either choose private camping with their Bedouin guide, or stay in a shared camp along with other foreign visitors.)

Day 7, November 7

After breakfast, our driver will escort us to Petra, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. A marvel of natural beauty and jaw-dropping engineering, Petra is an incredible sight to behold. Today we’ll enter through the Siq, a mile-long canyon that ends at the Treasury, Petra’s most famous carved facade.

Spend the rest of the day exploring this ancient city with your private tour guide.

After our visit our driver will take us to a Bedouin camp run by a local cooperative for a traditional dinner and overnight in goat-hair tents.

(Accommodation: Ammarin Bedouin Camp, with toilets and showers, but please bring your own towel; Meals: breakfast, dinner.)

Day 8, November 8

After breakfast we’ll drive two hours north to the village of Ghor al Mazra’a on the southern shore of the Dead Sea. There we’ll learn how to make traditional crafts, cook Arab bread over a fire, and have lunch with the local community. A portion of our trip fee goes directly to this village, which is one of the most impoverished in Jordan.

That afternoon, our driver will take us to the hotel at the Dead Sea where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool or floating in the Sea.

Day 9, November 9

Today our guide will take us on a tour of Bethany beyond the Jordan, the historic site of the Baptism of Jesus.

We will then drive up to Mt. Nebo, the location where Moses looked out across the Holy Land.

From there our guide will take you to St. George’s church to view the enormous 6th century mosaic map of the Holy Land built into the floor.

Return to your Dead Sea hotel for our overnight.

Day 10, November 10

Our Journey in Jordan has come to a close. Spend the morning relaxing at the hotel before being escorted to the airport for your departure.

Price Includes: FFI fees, transportation to all listed locations in a tour bus (all days except Days 4 and 5 in Orjan village where transportation will be handled locally), a professional English-speaking guide on touring days, (does not include Orjan village, where a local host will accompany you for your activities), entrance to all listed sites and activities, listed accommodations (based on sharing a double room and availability at the time of booking), listed meals, tips for drivers and guides, and Visa fees to Jordan. (You must provide scanned copies of your passports before your arrival.)

Know before you go

  • There will be one night of camping where there are no toilets or showers are available - so be prepared!
  • Weather should be pleasant - late fall, with warm days and cooler nights.
  • We will be on farms, so bring appropriate clothing for harvesting olives.
