Overview

From the local markets carrying everything from exotic fruits to beautiful handmade needleworks, to the Chiang Mai Flower Festival parade and cultural exchange of customs and values with your home hosts, this Journey will give you a well-rounded view of what Thailand's culture is all about!

Home Hospitality

Home Hospitality provided by the Friendship Force club of Lamphun.

Live With a Local

  • Ambassadors and hosts will share their lives and various experiences, and gain an understanding of history, culture, and beliefs of both countries.
  • There will be opportunities to see traditional dances, listen to music, and learn about traditional handicrafts in and around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
  • Ambassadors will explore local markets and identify local fruits, vegetables, and flowers. They will have a chance to see Buddhist and Hindu temples and learn about the religions and ceremonies.
  • Tucked into the metropolitan city of Bangkok are hidden parks, old houses that are now museums, and neighborhoods where "everyday life" can be seen. The ambassadors will see rural life in the north in contrast to city life in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Gems and jewelry, traditional pottery, silks and cottons, weavings, embroideries, and needlework are all part of what Thailand is about!

Sightseeing Highlights

  • Ambassadors will attend the annual Chiang Mai Flower Festival with parades, Flower Queen and attendants, and colorful displays of flowers.
  • Visit the Jim Thompson House and Museum.
  • Tour of the Royal Palace and Emerald Buddha, Chinatown, and the Golden Buddha.
  • Explore the riverfront area of Bangkok by river taxi; go to Wat Po to see the Reclining Buddha, and stop at Wat Arun.
  • Tour the Rose Gardens and Floating Market.
To be able to experience the real atmosphere of the present and past lifestyle in the northern part of Thailand was wonderful. I feel so excited to know the character and history of Thai people. They are so gentle and energetic always with a smile. - 2015 Ambassador Coordinator

Know before you go

  • We will be leaving winter behind and traveling to the tropics, so summer clothing will be appropriate, but bring a light jacket or sweater for chilly evenings in the northern parts or in hotels/restaurants.
  • Pack as lightly as possible, as you will be handling your own luggage in some places and you may want to purchase some "treasures," as Thailand is a shopper's paradise.
  • When visiting the Royal Palace and temples, dress modestly by covering to the elbows and ankles.
  • There can be considerable amounts of walking throughout the Journey.
  • Interested applicants should complete the forms and send $820 for the Lamphun and Chiang Rai portion by October 31.
