Check-in and get some rest to acclimate to the altitude.

OPTIONAL - Nov. 8, 2018

Today you have a full day excursion to the Inca agricultural experimental center of Moray, famous for its sunken amphitheater, made up of four circular terraces, which appear to disappear into the earth like an artificial crater. The site was an Inca agricultural research station designed for experimenting with crops at various altitudes (some of which run down to depths of 100 meters). It is believed that the terraces, built over containing walls filled with fertile earth and watered by complex irrigation systems, enabled the Incas to grow more than 250 plant species.

After lunch, continue to the impressive Maras salt pools formed by water emerging from a lake inside a mountain in the Urubamba Valley. Enjoy an amazing view of evaporating ponds for the extraction of salt. Learn about ancestral techniques, which are still used, in agricultural, irrigation and salt-recollection tasks, as well as in Andean festivals and rites.

Return to the hotel and overnight.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch

OPTIONAL - Nov. 9, 2018

You start the day with a morning transfer to the Ollantaytambo train station where you will enjoy a 2½ hour train ride aboard the Peru Rail Vistadome Train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) and the “Lost City of the Incas,” Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival to Aguas Calientes you will be met by a tour representative who will transfer you to the Inkaterra El MAPI Hotel, check-in.

After a brief stop you will meet with your guide and take a 20-minute ride up to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Perched 8,200 feet above the valley, it was hidden by mountains and semi-tropical jungles for 400 years until discovered by Hiram Bingham of Yale University in 1911. Archaeologists believe that the Inca “Virgin of the Sun” took refuge from the Spanish Conquistadors here. Your tour, by an English speaking guide, will last for approximately 2 hours and afterwards enjoy lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge located at the entrance of the citadel.

After lunch, you have the option to return to the ruins on your own (at no extra cost), or you can take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and return to the hotel.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner

OPTIONAL - Nov. 10, 2018

Today you have the day free to explore on your own.

A few suggestions:

1) Return to Machu Picchu on your own (entrance fees for second day are not included),

2) Aguas Calientes has many stores and restaurants, as well as thermal spring baths! You may enjoy exploring it on your own.

3) Museo de Sitio Manuel Chávez Ballón/Machu Picchu Museum. Located at the base of the walking path to Machu Picchu and within walking distance from Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu Pueblo, this recently opened museum offers a splendid multimedia display of the history of the famous ruins above.

In the early afternoon, check-out of the hotel and meet at the station for the Peru Rail Vistadome train back to Cusco. After a 4 ½ hour ride thru the Sacred Valley, you will arrive at Cusco and will be transferred to the Los Portales de Cusco Hotel, for check-in and overnight.

Meals: breakfast

OPTIONAL - Nov. 11, 2018

This morning’s tour is of the oldest continuously inhabited city in the western hemisphere. It includes not only the major landmarks of Cusco, the Cathedral, Santo Domingo Church and the Plaza de Armas, but also the nearby ruins of Kenko, Puca-pucara, Tambomachay and the Sacsayhuaman Fortress. Once the center of the Inca civilization, modern Cusco is a delightful combination of Inca and colonial architecture.

Return to the hotel.

Rest of the day at leisure and overnight.

Meals: breakfast

OPTIONAL - Nov. 12, 2018

Today enjoy a full day bus journey through the Peruvian Andes from Cusco to Puno. Today one of South America’s most extraordinary overland trips takes you by coach to Puno passing through striking highland scenery and picturesque Andean villages. Brief stops at the town of Andahuaylillas, a showcase of the colonial art in Peru, sometimes called “the Sistine Chapel of America” and at Raqchi to see the remains of the remarkable temple of Viracocha, considered by the historians an important Inca construction.

Lunch is included.

Upon arrival to Puno, transfer to Casa Andina Standard, check-in and overnight.

Meals: breakfast

OPTIONAL - Nov. 13, 2018

Today visit to the Uros Indian and Taquile Island at Lake Titikaka. This full day excursion will take you to the highest navigable lake in the world, to visit the floating islands of the Uros Indians, considered themselves Lords of the Lake, and they were convinced they had black blood because they did not feel the cold of the lake and the winter.

Continuing to Taquile where a native community of about 400 families still lives with the traditions of the 14th century that respect the principals of an Incan way life. Taquile is a very important site on Lake Titikaka for its archeological remains, the sacred and ceremonial sites, the festive activities, their rituals and for the daily life of the inhabitants which is dedicated to farming, textile production and fishing.

Lunch is provided.

Afterwards return to the hotel and stay overnight.

Meals: breakfast and lunch

OPTIONAL - Nov. 14, 2018

After breakfast and check-out, your day begins with an excursion to the Sillustani Burial Towers. This complex stands on the shore of Lake Umayo and is famous for its chullpas, large circular fortified burial towers for the chiefs and important people of the early villages of the Collao plateau. Some are 12 meters high (39 feet), and remarkable for their shape, thinner at the base and wider at the top. These ancient and impressive tombs from the pre-Inca period were built from a mixture of stone and adobe.
