Join us on this potentially record-breaking Journey to Huntsville, Alabama, USA, where we will attend celebrations honoring the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing! Visit the US Space and Rocket Center where you will view fascinating space exhibits, participate in a celebratory parade in the Courthouse Square, meet descendants of the German rocket team behind the building of the Saturn V rocket, and participate in an attempt to break the world record by launching 5000 model rockets simultaneously at the exact time of the Apollo 11 launch on July 16, 1969.

Live With a Local

  • During your visit to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center you will get to relive the history of the German rocket team led by Dr. Werner Von Braun. There are displays honoring that great German team from the time of their initial rocket development at Peenemunde, Germany to and through their development of the giant Saturn V rocket that took men to the moon.
  • At social events, you will meet with some of the remaining family members of these great German engineers and scientists. During these visits you may wish to share your experiences and compare to their experiences of being brought to this strange land and thrust into this epic engineering feat. You may also meet some of the U.S. engineers that worked along side their German partners.

Sightseeing Highlights

  • Visit the US Space and Rocket Center where you will take a tour of the museum and exhibits
  • Participate in a parade to the Courthouse Square
  • Attempt to break the world record by launching 5000 model rockets simultaneously at the exact time of the Apollo 11 launch on July 16, 1969. In addition, model rockets will be launched around the world at 9:32 a.m. in each time zone during a 24-hour period.

Day 1 – Sunday, July 14

Arrive in Huntsville, Alabama. You will be met at the airport by your home host(s) and will spend the remainder of the day in their company.

Dinner that evening will be with your home hosts.

Day 2 – Monday, July 15

Attend a welcome brunch followed by a visit to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center (USSRC) for a tour of the museum and exhibits, including the special exhibit “Apollo: When We Went to the Moon.”

In the evening you will be hosted at a club member(s) home for a dinner party.

Day 3 – Tuesday, July 16

In the morning, you will be back to the USSRC or to the host coordinator’s home, Trails End, in the beautiful Paint Rock Valley, where you will be launching your individual model rocket at the exact same time as the original moon landing launch, as part of the attempt of a World Record of simultaneously launching 5000 model rockets.

In addition, model rockets will be launched around the world at 9:32 a.m. in each time zone during a 24-hour period.

Afterwards, we will visit the Celebration Car Show to view a display of vintage cars of the Apollo era.

In the evening we will celebrate the era “When We Went to the Moon” with a summer dinner and program at the USSRC. The entire community will join with invited VIP guests, including moonwalker Harrison Schmitt and Apollo 15 Command Module Pilot Al Worden for the celebration. This Apollo Homecoming celebrates decades of historic space accomplishments and will look forward beyond today, when we return to the Moon and Mars.

Day 4 – Wednesday, July 17

Ambassadors will enjoy activity(s) or day trip of their choice – to be pre-coordinated between ambassador(s) and host(s).

Day 5 – Thursday, July 18

Free Day

Ambassadors will enjoy activity(s) of their choice – to be pre-coordinated between ambassador(s) and host(s).

A casual group dinner is planned for this evening. Invited guests will be a selection of local Huntsville residents who played significant roles in the development and implementation of the technologies that made landing on the moon possible, and some family and friends of the German scientists who settled and worked with Dr. Werner Von Braun.

Day 6 – Friday, July 19

Parade and dancing in the streets.

We will participate in the parade to the Courthouse Square which will feature the Marshall Space Flight Center’s Lunar Rover Vehicle replicated by today’s local workforce at our Polaris ATV facility. And we will, as we did 50 years ago, dance in the streets on Courthouse Square to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Day 7 – Saturday, July 20

Farewell party for ambassadors and concert at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

As we say our farewells, we will also join with celebrations around the world to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.

Day 8 - Sunday, July 21

Ambassadors and hosts say goodbye at Huntsville Airport.

Price Includes: FFI and host fees, all admissions fees for the week, welcome brunch, Celebration Gala Dinner and farewell party/concert.

Cost does not include optional activities individually selected by the ambassadors for free days.
